Strong Support For East Cape Escape

Posted: Wed 01 Mar 2000

Support is growing for the Suzuki East Cape Motorcycle Adventure Ride being organised for April 15-16 from both riders and sponsors.

The best way to imagine the ride is as a non-competitive rally on motorcycles crossed with orienteering. The ride starts and finishes at Whakatane from the 15th to the 16th of April and includes a stop over at Te Araroa Saturday night.

According to Event Organiser Nick Reader, entries are flowing in steadily with many people ringing for details. Nick says that Motorcycle Adventure rides are gaining in popularity as more and more people seek to explore some of the more remote and scenic areas of NZ on motorcycles.

Co-organiser Phil Goldsmith is very pleased to announce the support of Suzuki motorcycles as a naming rights sponsor with Continental Tyres, Acerbis accessories and Underwood and Wilkins Motorcycles also putting their backing into the event. Phil says that on s uch a long ride involving diverse terrain, tyre selection, bike choice and bike preparation are crucial factors for enjoyment and success.

New riding areas, involving forestry and farmland along the route, are continuing to be made open to the event by local communities. Local communities are a crucial part of the event and will provide much of the land access, the catering and some entertainment.

Forestry companies like Carter Holt Harvey have also been receptive to the event mainly because it involves one organised ride, rather than frequent use by small groups. The riders will enjoy cruising through mature pine forests access tracks as a good break from the road linking sections.

One unique feature of the event will be the wild Motu River Jet Boat Tours experience. Riders stop over at the mouth of the famous Motu river for a break from the road and a thrill in one of the V8 powered boats.

The good times will be cranking on both the land and the water for sure!
