With its large displacement cruisers thumping steadily out of dealer showrooms, Suzuki decided the time was right for an entry-level cruiser. The result is the all-new Intruder LC 250 – a lightweight smaller capacity machine that’s perfect for the motorcycling first-timer who wants cruiser styling in an easily managed package.
Recognising that entry level riders require motorcycles with a low seat height and well positioned handlebars offering plenty of leverage, Suzuki has delivered both in a stylish package.
With the seat just 685mm (27 inches) above the ground, the new Suzuki allows owners to get both feet flat on the road when they stop at the traffic lights. At the same time, the torquey, under-square 65 degree air-cooled V-twin engine allows them to get ahead of the traffic when the lights turn green.
In addition to the low slung seat, the all-new Suzuki Intruder continues the cruiser style with dual swept back chrome plated exhausts, deeply valanced pin-striped mud guards in the American tradition and a fat, 12 litre teardrop fuel tank.
The generously finned cylinders of the engine are under-square: the piston bore diameter measures just 52mm but the stroke of 58.5mm is close to what Suzuki uses for its brawny 1200 Bandit engine.
To provide good cylinder filling and thus good power throughout the rev range, the new Suzuki Intruder breathes through a Mikuni BDS 28mm carburettor fitted with a throttle position sensor (TPS) that allows the electronic ignition module to vary spark timing according to throttle position and engine rpm.
This feature means the new Suzuki has optimal ignition and that, combined with the two inlet and single exhaust valve in each cylinder head leads to a very high level of combustion efficiency, meaning the Intruder LC 250 makes very good use of the fuel it burns.
The pistons are coated with a compound called Black Fluoro which is designed to reduce friction with the cylinder walls and provide excellent wear characteristics.
In addition to the chromed exhausts the engine breaths in through a plated airbox and dry paper air filter while the engine side covers are also highly polished.
The Suzuki Intruder LC250 may have the lightweight – just 143kg – and low seat of a smaller capacity motorcycle, but it still looks like a bigger cruiser with a generous 1520mm wheelbase, raked out front-end and polished instrument nacelle atop the fuel tank.
The new Suzuki rolls on 18-inch front and 15-inch rear tyres fitted to polished rims and wire-spoked wheels. And to ensure comfort on extended rides, the seat is wide and deeply padded – just like the saddle on the 1500 Intruder LC.
To make carrying wet weather gear and other items easy, Suzuki has fitted a five litre storage compartment under the seat and has included a security lock and a helmet retaining wire for locking it to the bike.
And in the true customising tradition of cruisers, Suzuki has a range of optional accessories available for the Intruder LC 250, including a windscreen, front accessory bar, sissy-bar with a rear carrier attached and steel supports for saddlebags.
The Suzuki Intruder LC 250 is available for just $11,995 at Suzuki dealers nationwide.
