The Tarawera 100 is a tough event and it isn't made easier when you get brought down on the first start corner. So it was for Team Bay City Motorcycles riders Mike Reed and Paul Burgess, with Mike being shunted off from behind and Paul running into a fallen rider (whose head and body were then jammed under the KLX).
Despite the handicap both riders scraped off the mud, put their heads down and set about fighting through the traffic of 350 plus bikes to post respectable results. After exiting the traffic and a fast 2nd lap Paul had taken over the class lead and won the Mega Vets, but decided to continue on for another two laps to finish the event, as he found the endless torque and great suspension of the KLX450R made it perfect weapon for the large whoops that were developing in the ash.
Mike posted an overall 40th on his KXF250 after taking on a tree and being winded close to the end.
