Reardon puts his hand up as the one to beat

The 2007 Australian Motocross Championship got underway at Broadford in Victoria on the weekend, with reigning Australian Supercross Champion, Daniel Reardon, proving why he is the hottest motorcycling property in the country right now.

Reardon easily won both of the Pro Open motos in the opening round of the 10-round championship, to clearly state his intentions of doing an Australian Supercross/Motocross double.

The first Pro Open moto saw Honda’s Craig Anderson shoot to the holeshot from Yamaha rider Cheyne Boyd and Reardon on his Kawasaki.

The trio pushed each other for a good ten minutes of the race, before an uncharacteristic slip-up saw Anderson go down and fall back to third, with Reardon pushing through to claim the lead.

Despite the mishap, Anderson clawed his way back into second place with only a few laps to spare, to claim second place ahead of a courageous Boyd in third.

But it was all Reardon at the front – the budding superstar putting on the afterburners and flying around the Broadford circuit, to storm home almost half a lap clear of Anderson.

In the second Moto, it was looking as though Reardon would once again romp it in after taking an early lead, before a crash to Anderson forced a re-start.

The re-start saw Suzuki’s Daryl Hurley go into the lead early, but he was soon chased down by Reardon who took out a clean sweep on the day, with Hurley coming second and Boyd finishing on the podium in third once more.

Speaking after his dominance, Reardon admitted the Broadford track provided some tough riding, but that he was hopeful he could continue his form to be crowned the 2007 Champion.

“It’s good – I love it when I come out to near Melbourne because I guess that’s where two rounds of the Supercross were and now the Motocross, so it’s been a good start to the Championship,” he said.

“The track was a little bit dry, but everyone has to ride the same track. There were a few inconsistent areas and it was a little bit hard, but as I said, we’ve got to all ride the same thing.

“I finished second in the Championship last year, so I am hoping that I can have a good series and to come out on top would really be unreal.”
