NatRR: Aussie Picks Up Trophies

Posted: Wed 12 Apr 2006

Now that the dust has settled on the 2005-2006 road race season, we need to take a look at some of the extra trophies that were up for grabs during the SsangYong New Zealand Superbike Road Race Championships.

Although three times Australian Superbike Champion, Shaun Giles wasn’t able to pick up the Superbike title; he did however win both the RK Chain Trophy and the Allan Ramage Trophy.

The RK Chain Trophy:
The RK Chain Trophy is donated by W Whites Ltd and awarded to the highest points scoring Superbike rider running RK Chain during the 2005/6 SsangYong New Zealand Superbike Championship.

The highly decorative Samurai helmet is present each year, making an impressive addition to any rider’s trophy cabinet.

The Allan Ramage Trophy
Allan’s family presented the trophy after his tragic death in a motorcycle racing accident at Levels Raceway at a Car/bike meeting in 1987.

The trophy was originally presented to the first 250cc Production class rider in a special 4 x 4 laps race, run at the National points round held at levels Raceway.

At the end of each four laps the leader went to the back of the grid.

With the demise of the 250cc Production class and as there hadn’t been a round of the National Road Race Championship, held in Timaru, the trophy wasn’t presented for a number of years.

When the National motorcycle road race championship returned to Timaru in 2003, Allan’s Family decided to represent the Trophy to the winner of the last Production Superbike race of the meeting.

The trophy has some famous names engraved on it.

Winners have been:

  • 1988 Aaron Slight
  • 1989 Simon Crafar
  • 1990 Wayne Picard
  • 1991-92 John Hepburn
  • 1993 Grant Ramage
  • 1994 Brett Richmond.
  • 2002 Andrew Stroud
