Townley Short of Strength in Mons:

Organisers welcomed magnificent weather conditions in Mons for the third round of the Belgian championships however track conditions were typically demanding and the wet underground caused for the usual formation of deep sand ruts and challenging bumps.

A first turn crash in race one ruined any chances of Ben Townley challenging Belgian heroes Stefan Everts and Joel Smets with the Kiwi having to retire with a damaged triple clamp.

BT went on to post a third place finish in both the second and third heats however he could not keep in touch with Everts and Smets who set the race pace from start to finish.

“This track can be so demoralizing although I must say I get better every time I come here. The sand and bumps are so unpredictable and it takes an incredible amount of strength to go fast. I think that is where Stefan and Joel had a major advantage over me today. I kept up with them for a while in the third heat but I had to use so much strength. I backed off towards the end – my main priority is the world championships and with this circuit you have to ride on the edge and I was not willing to risk that today” explained Townley.
