Pic- You could become as skilled as Stefan Merriman:
New Zealand is fortunate indeed to have someone as pro-active as Greg Power and the proposal below is very timely as it will assist those hopefuls who intend to ride in an event that is way beyond anything they have encountered previously.
It will also go a long way to encourage Kiwi participation in their very own ISDE in 2006 (Yeah, next year) and provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for you to rub shoulders with the best in the world and perhaps provide a source of stories (slightly exaggerated) for your Grandchildren.
Power Adventures: Press Release:
There is no long-term training program for Enduro or X Country available to prepare riders for New Zealand events - let alone prepare for the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) being held in Taupo in September 2006. This has resulted in riders looking to us for ways to improve their skills and reach a fitness/endurance level that will enable them to complete the prestigious of all off road events – the ISDE.
Trevor and Greg Power together with a team of specialists have put into place a program to bring the riders up to speed with the riding skills, mechanical skills and fitness/endurance required. The plan has four components:
Fitness/Endurance Training
Mechanical Skills
Riding Skills
Team Participation
FITNESS/ENDURANCE TRAINING:
Physical training is extremely important for multi day events. To provide the necessary base for training, we have employed the assistance of Roly, a trained Physical Fitness Instructor who has previously trained the New Zealand SAS, assisted with All Black training and helped many high profile sportsmen in their quest for perfection. Roly is a practical trainer who is currently working on a testing program which will include Enduro/X Country specific tests that include the motorcycle and relevant equipment. This will ensure the testing and training is fun, exciting and is tailored to improve motorcycle specific endurance and strength. What better way to train? Prospective riders will meet with their gear and bikes at a venue for testing and personal assessment. From there the riders will receive their personal training programmes which they can follow to the extent they desire. There will be regular get together testing (Quarterly) to assess the development of riders and to adjust their program if necessary. The more dedicated will move onto the elite phase with an even more specific program to "peak" the riders for the ISDE. Basic Nutrition will be included in the program.
MECHANICAL SKILLS:
The skills necessary to be competitive in the ISDE in particular - are those of tyre changing and motorcycle maintenance. Bike set-up is also important and these skills will be taught at our training courses outlined later in this release. Experienced Enduro exponents will be (and have already offered their time) on hand to give the benefit of their experience to those interested in learning.
RIDER SKILLS:
Most riders will have the skills necessary to compete in long distance off road racing. It is not expected to have to teach basic riding as all participants should be at a level at least near National level. Experience at X Country (Belray/Tarawera/Rodney/GNCC/Power Adv 2 Man) and/or Enduro is a pre-requisite for acceptance into this training program. The skills taught will be more - refining the already excellent ability, learning the tricks of the trade and learning from each other.
TEAM PARTICIPATION:
It is a fact that in Enduro (and in particular multi day enduro) that the TEAM is the most important aspect of the competition. No individual rider can complete a multi day international enduro without the assistance of fellow team members and in particular Support Crew. For any rider to compete in a multi day Enduro it is necessary to have at least one supporter to assist with the Team cause. Everything from food, fuel, accommodation, transport and importantly checks are organised and manned by supporters. This aspect of enduro will be focused on during the camps.
THREE DAY CAMPS:
To make all this work, we are organising two 3 Day Camps where riders will learn and train at a multi day scenario. We will set up Cross and MX tests, Work Periods, Park Ferme, etc. This will be as realistic as possible with 6–7 riding hours per day and all the pressure we can apply.
COST:
We don’t know the cost yet but you will be informed before you have to commit to the program. The cost will be broken up into 6 monthly blocks, meaning that you only have to pay for six months at a time, and if you decide not to continue you are only up for the initial cost.
Costs will be determined by the number of riders versus the cost of employing specialists needed to run this program.
