AFR Team - Press Release:
Teenager recuperating after quad-bike race crash:
Manukau teenager, Shane O\'Connor, 16, is today being transferred to a general ward at Auckland Hospital after being badly injured in a quad bike crash while racing at Waikaraka Park on Sunday.
Shane, who has been a member of the Auckland Finance Racing team since its inception, hit a concrete wall after another bike spun out on the track and collided with him.
Shane was in critical care for 24 hours and suffered a short-term memory loss but no broken bones thanks to his parents\' insistence that he wear the best protective gear available.
His father, Mike O\'Connor, says the motor racing-mad youngster is on the road to recovery and will suffer no lasting ill-effects. \"He did everything right, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,\" he says.
His almost-new Suzuki 400 four-wheel bike, however, was wrecked.
Mike says his son will not be racing it, or any other quad bike, again. However, he will continue to race his first love, TQ cars, although it\'s not known how long it will be before he\'s behind the wheel again.
Shane is a pupil at Sacred Heart College.
