Sun Shines on
Summercross \'03
Sunday Dec 28, under the brilliant Bay of Plenty sun, New Zealand saw the closest thing to a World Motocross Grand Prix, when New Zealand’s top International riders took to the track against our home based talent at the SummerCoss 03.
The Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club event, run in conjunction with the NZ Dirt Bike Federation, saw New Zealand’s World tile contenders, Taupo’s Ben Townley and Motueka’s Josh Coppins, continue their build up for the 2004 season.
Townley (KTM) took five out of six wins in the 125cc and Open classes races ahead of Coppins (Honda), Darryl King (Yamaha) and Copy Cooper (Honda).
Townley also won the Invitation Feature race
\"I love racing in front of my New Zealand fans, especially with guys like Josh and Darryl. It was awesome,\" said Townley after the meeting.
Coppins riding a similar machine to the factory Honda CRF450 he will race in the World Champs was happy with his string of first and second placings..
\"I’m pretty tired, we raced for more than two hours today, on rough sandy ground, but the bike felt good and fun to ride,\" said Coppins.
Both riders will be head to Europe in the next couple of weeks to continue their preparation for the 2004 World motocross championships.
The event saw record entries in all classes and the biggest crowd ever, the Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club was extremely happy with the success of their new initiative
\"It was a lot of had work, but the result made it all worthwhile,\" said club president Tony Rees.
The club has spent 2003 building up its club base, by encouraging people into the sport and the results speak for themselves.
