Team Wicked`s View of the GNCC:
Wicked Words on GNCC:
The first round of the GNCC (Grand National Cross Country) Series held at Mangawhai in the weekend proved that this series is going to be even more awesome than the last. The turnout of riders in all classes was bigger and more impressive and that meant some unreal racing was witnessed by all.
Saturday morning saw the start of the series with the junior/classic 4 lap/1hour race followed by the quads and trail riders. Team Wicked had excellent results with Damon Nield, on his Honda CR 85’ winning the juniors and on a mission to retain his champion title from last years series. This was also the first ever x-country race for his younger sister Cassidy, who was 2nd in the 7-10yrs and 14th overall in the junior race on her Suzuki DRZ110.
Sunday morning the wind had died down somewhat from Saturday, but the spasmodic heavy rain made some of the gas stops a bit tricky. There was a big turnout in the rookie/clubman race in the morning and an impressive line-up of pros for the afternoons 6lap/2hour race.
With Paul Whibley and Chris Birch battling wheel to wheel for first place the whole 6 laps and Chris Power going hard behind Sean Clarke for third spot the Pro/Expert race was as excellent for the spectators as it was for competitors. The track was fast and tiring with the sand soft and the whoops big!.
Mitchell Nield, the oldest in Team wicked at 15, had moved up to pros after finishing last years series as 2nd expert. Racing with ‘the fast boys’ was tuff, but he still managed to post some great lap times on his KTM125. He finished 14th overall pros and 3rd in both under pro 21yrs and pro 125cc. An impressive result and a great end to an excellent weekend.
Looking forward to the 2nd round at Woodhill first weekend of October.
