Supercross Battle to Tokoroa

With 2 rounds raced of the five round NZ Supercross Championship, the battle heats up this Saturday 18 January at Tokoroa – the home of Supercross in NZ.

Championship leader Darryll King strangely sat out the Wanganui Supercross 11 January that attracted 7000 spectators, leaving his rivals a clear opening to gain points. Darryll is unsure if he will front Tokoroa.

Leading the 250cc class is former World Champion and current NZ Champion Shayne King of New Plymouth, after scoring a second placing at Round one and winning round two. The major competitors to Shayne so far have been Tauranga hot shot Mason Philips and Damien King, both on Honda CR 250’s.

In the smaller, but ultra competitive 125cc capacity class, the scrap is being lead by a very hard working and fit Mason Philips on a Honda CR 125. Mason has been scrapping with Damien King, the Christchurch brothers Hayden (KTM) and Quinton McKay (Yamaha) and evergreen Mark Penny on a Suzuki.

At Tokoroa, the 125 cc class struggle will continue between the nation’s young guns all out to secure the national title. Mason Philips will be focused on maintaining his 125cc lead and his top 250cc placings. Philips made two visits to Germany in 2002 taking on rounds of the German Championship. Whilst struggling in Europe, the experience has obviously toughened the Tauranga man. Damien King will be very keen to gain the points lead to defend his National 125cc Supercross title with Hayden McKay keen to prove that South Islanders can mix it with the best.

But is won’t just be rival riders to worry about, because the track will demand an equal amount of attention. Featuring double jumps, triple jumps, table tops and stutters, the condensed track will push the skills and courage of the riders to the limit. One lapse of concentration or false move can send the riders spinning off the track.

The Supercross racers will be getting some big air over the many jumps on the course, but it will be the Freestyle Motocross riders who will show the crowd what Big Air really is when they take to the sky. Tokoroa’s own Nick Franklin is joining with Palmy FMX teammate Luke Price of Tauranga to put on a massive FMX demo three times during the night. Moves like Rock Solids, Superman seat grabs, 9 O\'clocks, Indian Airs and heel clickers just have to be seen to be believed. The reigning Vodafone X Air champ is fresh from an Australian FMX campaign where he looks set to make a good living in the cutting edge world of FMX.
