Taupo is the place to be for MotoCross enthusiasts this weekend.
It`s the venue for the final round of the Yamaha National MotoCross Championship. And that is going to provide a bit of a dust-up between the old International guard of the King siblings and the new guard Internationals, Josh Coppins and the kid, Ben Townley. They are joined by the Taranaki lad Daryl Hurley, soon to get on the Big Bird to the States.
There will be a few local lads who will have their gunsights zeroed in on those names. For what better way to bust in to the big MotoCross picture than by taking a few of the aforementioned scalps.
Have you read that a new numbering system will be used in the Worlds next year?
That will see Josh with #5 on his Honda, not the #2 he fought so hard for, Ben gets to wear #18 on his KTM and Darryl Atkins #127 if he had a ride.

UPDATE 1: After posting this it has dawned on me that a boat has been missed this weekend and not just a little boat. It`s a BIG boat. About the size of the QE2.
Those names mentioned above are providing an event as close to a World event that many of us will ever get to see BUT where is the promotion ???
I received zilch and I have not seen it promoted anywhere.
I know that many stories of many spent man hours can be told by members of the host club of their efforts to provide the best event that they possibly can.
Should not MNZ have taken a role in promoting a National event such as this??
OK, maybe that is not MNZ`s role and I will soon be told if it`s not! So watch this space. Hey Geoff MotoGP Across the Atlantic - you sure gave me a bum steer. And I thought you were some kind of God and your word was Gospel. Josh and Ben weren`t at Taupo. [OK,Ben was, but he was wearing sandles not boots].
Anyhow the racing was great and we saw some class riding, even though it was rather gusty.[More event details will follow]
But the points raised in Update 1: are just as relevant for the reasons raised therein.
What is your opinion?
The spectator numbers at Taupo certainly do not in my opinion justify the efforts of the club OR the competitors.
So what is the way forward??
It is unfortunate though that they did not go just take that other step and appoint some one to promote the event.
Thus they would reap the extra benefits from their toils. And I am sure they could find a good use for the deserved extra dosh.
Providing PR material is cheap. It is also an absolute breeze with the electronic communication medium that is enabling you to read this. But the results from PR can be most meaningful and rewarding. Who knows that some kid, dragged along by his Mom and Dad could become inspired to be the next generation`s Josh Coppins. Or he may even become just one of the many who have huge fun on two wheels AND pay their annual MNZ fees each year. One does not need to be Don Brash to know that the more members there are, the lower the fees.
Do you think the status quo is OK, or, do you think the bar should be raised.
What is your opinion?
