Honda Unveils the Ultimate Sports Touring Dream Machine

Honda takes its sports touring flagship to a completely new level as the STX1300 Pan European cruises its way into the New Zealand market for 2002.

“After 12 years as the favourite of touring riders around the world, the ST1100 Pan European has undergone a total, radical redesign,” says Clive Cooper-Smith, General Manager of Blue Wing Honda. “A new incarnation of a classic, the STX1300 features even sportier performance, better ergonomics, more carrying capacity and improved fuel economy.”

The most noticeable change in the STX1300 is the all-new aerodynamic design. The dynamic, angular lines of the STX’s beautiful new full-coverage fairing offer superb wind protection for the most comfortable touring experience. The eye-catching new dual-element fuel tank splits the fuel load between the normal fuel tank and an auxiliary under-seat unit, aiding control by centralising weight and mass, and its large capacity increases your touring range.

At the heart of this superb machine, the completely redesigned 1260cc V4 engine provides breathtaking acceleration and makes the STX1300 the ultimate in touring comfort and convenience. The smaller proportions of this new V4 give it lighter weight and stronger power output, while the new PGM-FI fuel injection system ensures instant response and smooth, peak performance in all New Zealand riding conditions.

Even the braking system has been made simpler and lighter. The STX’s new dual combined brake system provides incredibly smooth control, and has been thoroughly updated with the integration of a smaller secondary master cylinder. The three-piston calliper system optimises the balance between front and rear wheel braking control, while the new lightweight triple-spoke cast aluminium wheels mount high-performance radial tyres for superb handling.

A big change to the new STX is its all-new aluminium lightweight twin-spar frame. The frame’s large, triple-box-section main spars maintain rigidity and incorporate the engine as a central stressed member for lighter, sportier handling – even when carrying a passenger and a heavy touring load. The engine is also positioned farther forward for a more neutral and responsive feeling of control and more comfortable seating for both rider and passenger.

Suspension duties are handled by a large new 45mm cartridge-type H-MAS front fork that lends itself to smoothly responsive, exhilarating sports touring performance. A heavy-duty single-damper rear suspension supports a lightweight new cast aluminium swingarm holding the STX’s clean and quiet shaft final drive system.

According to Clive Cooper-Smith, General Manager of Blue Wing Honda, ”the new STX features the most luxurious sports touring amenities on the New Zealand road.” Its new aerodynamic, 35-litre detachable panniers can each hold a full-face helmet and much more. Handy side pockets on either side of the front console keep essentials within easy reach. It truly is a touring rider’s dream. A massive new 45-litre optional top box completes the STX’s luggage system to securely carry enough equipment for the tour of a lifetime.

A combination of luxurious touring comfort and peerless control, the STX1300 features broad, compliant seating for long, comfortable hours in the saddle. Its beautifully appointed instrument display features big dials and the large liquid crystal display shows everything from fuel level to ambient temperature.

With its invigorating combination of technological innovation, power and smooth handling, and peerless comfort features, the STX1300 Pan European is the ultimate sports touring machine. Ride one today.
