Kawerau’s Tony Rees, began his Australian Road Race Championship campaign with a win in race one of the Production Superbike class at Barbagello Raceway Wanneroo Western Australia on Sunday.
Unfortunately, the weather was extremely changeable, making tyre choices critical to success. All of the top riders had problems with tyres, which was borne out by the variety in the finishing positions.
The New Zealand Superbike Champion, started race two with a pair of production tyres, on his Yamaha R1, which as the track remained dry, weren’t right and he was only able to come home fifth.
Race three saw Rees with a production front and a slick rear, which enabled him to stay at the front of the field, until it started to rain.
Despite the rain, Rees still had good traction with the slick rear tyre, unfortunately he lost the front end, which saw him end his day sliding down the track.
Even with a DNF, Rees finished the day fifth overall.
“Today has been a lottery with the weather and tyres, we have made a few wrong choices, but it is only round one of five,” Rees said last night.
When asked how he felt after his off, Rees said, ”The bike is pretty beaten up, but it all looks mostly cosmetic, fairing, handle bars, exhaust pipe etc”
