NEW ERA for MOTORCYCLE SPORT

The sport of Motorcycling in New Zealand took a giant leap forward last weekend at its annual conference held in Wellington.

Historically the sport has been administered by a committee style Executive. In a radical move, the conference voted to replace the 8 member Executive with a 3-member board, along with a new constitution, which empowers the General manager, now CEO, to run the sport of motorcycling as a professional business.

New Zealand in the past has featured prominently in World motorcycling, through the exploits of riders such as Hugh Anderson, Aaron Slight, Josh Coppins and the King brothers to mention a few.

The new initiatives will allow motorcycling to fully develop all aspects of the sport, producing more World Champions and opening new promotional opportunities, by encouraging greater participation from a wider section of the community from juniors to veterans.

Leading the newly constituted board into the twenty-first century is President Errol Conaghan of Palmerston North, the on-road board member is Kevin Grey of Auckland, while the off-road board member is John Gibbons of Te Puke. The CEO is David Appleton of Hamiton.
