‘A Storming Success’

Suzuki Desert Storm was described by many participants as “the best trail ride they had ever done”.

Attended by 900 riders on Saturday and 700 on Sunday, the numbers were slightly down from 2003, but still made for a fantastic atmosphere. The addition of the Rangipo Desert proved a hit with the riders, but did cause a few challenges for some of the novices. A sand blast across the Rangipo Desert NZ Army training area, steep climb up the ridge around Ghost bush then across the dry creek beds made the 04 Suzuki Desert Storm just that much better.

The event held at the base of Mount Ruapehu ran like clockwork with the sun doing the right thing by shining all weekend. The Ruapehu region was just stunning with the pristine mountain and alpine views.

Test rides on the new Suzuki off roaders proved popular with over 90 riders trying out the DRZ and RMZ range.

Scott Marshal aboard his ATV showed the 2 wheeler riders how to slide in the barrel race comp with the 50 cc race dominated by the dirt bike 50’s. Barry Jelacca won the true scooter race on his hugely powerful city scooter.

At night the gathering were entertained by videos of the event, a live band and bonfires around which to tell lies and embellish stories.

So the date change to April will remain with the next Suzuki Desert Storm planned for the weekend after Easter in 2005.

And just quietly - keep your ears open for another Ruapehu based ride 16-17 October 2004.
