BT takes home a double win in Belgian snow.
A white blanket of snow covering the Lommel circuit caused a slight delay in the race day proceedings while the organisers had to clear much of the race track of dangerous ice and snow due to sub zero temperatures. Kiwi motocross prodigy, Ben Townley, did not seem perturbed by the arctic conditions and set his sights on the task at hand.
A first moto hole-shot powered the New Zealander into lead with his Dutch team mate, Marc De Reuver hot on his heels. De Reuver passed BT in the early stages of the race however Townley’s factory KTM 250 four stroke slotted in behind the Dutchman and began to pressurise him. Townley set up De Reuver and dove passed two laps before the chequered flag. De Reuver tried a last minute aggressive pass but came off second best as BT crossed the finish line for his first moto win of the day.
A carbon copy of the first heat seemed to unfold as BT’s number 30 KTM lead the pack through the first corner. De Reuver again made an early race pass however this time BT was not content to slot in as he had done previously. A forced error by De Reuver gave Townley the opportunity to regain the lead with BT punishing the Dutchman’s mistake by taking the chequered flag and his first double win of the season.
“The track was quite unpredictable with lots of ice hidden just beneath the top layer of sand. I didn’t want to force it and risk any mistakes so I rode within my limits. I’m pumped with the double win – it feels great!” said a freezing but content Townley.
BT heads to Gemert next weekend for the first round of the Open Dutch championship. The gruelling sand circuit will be perfect preparation for the first MX GP on the 21st of March in Zolder, Belgium.
