The Hataitai Velodrome in Wellington, New Zealand played host to the inaugural Pro Circuit MX³ event this past weekend. The event originally scheduled for Saturday was postponed until Sunday due to high winds, with gale force winds gusting up to 134km/h the windy city was certainly living up to its nick name! This unique event combined round three of the New Zealand Supercross Championships with a freestyle competition and an acrobatic arena trials competition, providing something to interest almost every motorcycle fan!

Going into the event the lead of the 125 Supercross championship was up for grabs with only one point separating championship leader Jonathon Burkhart from second placed Darryll King with Queenstown’s Scott Columb 20 points back in third place. The 250 class was a similarly tight scenario with Darryll King leading by one point from Mason Phillips with Scott Columb again playing bridesmaid in third with an eighteen point deficit.

Thankfully the storm clouds cleared and a fine clear morning greeted the organizers and competitors on Sunday morning. The track, created by dumping 133 truckloads of dirt into the centre of the velodrome was always going to be tight and relatively technical but with added ravages caused by the inclement weather it was now also a rutted and rocky one, on which maestro Darryll King was the rider many were backing to win. The former world number two and multiple NZ title holder was on a mission to get points on the board and build a points buffer before the final round in Wanganui in a weeks time.

King on board his Pro Circuit supported Subway/Yamaha started promisingly by taking the win in the first 125 race, however Darryll had not counted on fired up little brother Damien King riding his Peter Glidden Honda/Pro Circuit CRF250 from a fourth place in the first race to two resounding victories on the new Honda four stroke lifting him from tenth to sixth overall in the series, while Darryll’s win and two second places were good enough to give him first place and a six point buffer over Jonathon Burkhart in second place.

The 250 class saw Darryll King shoot away to easily win the first moto but it was nearly a disaster in the second race when DK stalled the big YZF450 and took the best part of a lap to get it restarted! Showing his true professionalism DK started dead last and worked his way up to fourth place by race end to gain a valuable 18 points. Things were back to normal in the last race with DK taking the win from Suzuki’s Scott Columb in second and Yamaha teammate Mason Phillips in third.

Rider quotes:

Darryll King Overall Event Winner:
\"It was great to win both classes at The Pro Circuit MX3 Supercross; it was not a cake walk though. My Subway Yamaha\'s were superb, the only hiccup was stalling my YZ450 in race two and taking almost a lap to restart it. The starts were one of the biggest factors and there was plenty of bumping going on in turn one from the younger riders. I never managed a top three start all day which is unlike me. Thanks to everybody who helped put the event together after a terrible week of rain and wind. It turned out better than ever\"

Damien King:
“I was really happy with my result today. My Honda was just awesome – Pro Circuit supplied me one of their new ‘Low Boy’ titanium GP exhaust systems prior to the meeting and it definitely gave me the added edge I needed, I’ll have to ask them if they have anything else in their bag of tricks for this coming weekend so I can beat DK!”

Pro Circuit was the major sponsor of this event and they had an added bonus with all three place getters in both the 125 and 250 classes all using Pro Circuit exhaust systems to help achieve their excellent results!
